GoDaddy isn't so cheap, sure the first deal you get on a domain is nice, and then when its renewall time it goes from around $3.99 a year to $18 a year - at least thats what they tried to pull on me!
That and their control panel fucking blows. So much for Godaddy... but I'll like them for sponsoring Diggnation.
try http://namecheap.com they have been really good to me! I currently have 17 domains with them.
I'm slowly moving all of my domains to Namecheap. It's great.

Um...a little sensationalist are we? A .com renewal is something like $9 and you can, 100% of the time, find a coupon to take that down to $7-8.
I use WSDReg.com they have a really easy simple process and haven't tried to sell me crap that I don't need. Good company owned by a Staff member at namepros.
I am hosted with www.startlogic.com....I also have two domains registered through them.
The first was free with my hosting package....the second was $6.95. Pretty cheap. I haven't had any problems with them yet...
I second NameCheap. I transferred about 100 domains from GoDaddy to NameCheap.
Isn't namecheap an enom reseller?
It's so hard because domains are so competitive. Domains are a loss leader for GoDaddy. They generally lose money selling domain names. All their profit is made off of their services they shove at you during the checkout process.
It's the exact same thing Best Buy does with music. They give you music for low prices to get you to buy things like big screen televisions from them.
The only way you'll find a "clean, streamlined" registrar is if you're willing to pay an extra $10-15 year.
